Alicante sits on the Costa Blanca beneath the Santa Bárbara castle, with the palm-lined Explanada promenade, the whitewashed Santa Cruz quarter and the Postiguet beach right in the city centre. Boats leave from the harbour for the island of Tabarca, and in June the Hogueras de San Juan turns the city into a festival of bonfires. Its airport is also the main gateway to the Costa Blanca.
